Here are 3 paddles that I made. A very fun projected that allowed me to work on my sculpting skills. Mainly made from alder and accented with walnut and paduak. While they are built in such a way that the could be used to paddle a canoe down a river, they were built for home decor purposes.
They all follow the same pattern, but were accented in different ways. I removed a lot of the material using the bandsaw which was nerve racking to say the least. After getting the rough shape down, I used a spokeshave to refine the taper and finished it off with an orbital sander. Using a round over bit, I was able to quickly smooth over the edges of the handle.
These were finished with 3 coats of outdoor polyurethane, sanded with 400 between coats
